Pharmacy team win Betsi Star Award for their commitment to staff mental wellbeing

A pharmacist and pharmacy technician have received a Health Board Award for their commitment to supporting a staff member through their mental health challenges.

When a member of the team expressed that they were finding work a struggle because of their battle with mental health issues, the managers stepped in to help.

Wrexham Pharmacist Amber Wynne and Chief Pharmacy Technician Samantha Carvell feel it’s essential to provide support ‘at every opportunity’ to their team to ensure they feel safe and happy in the workplace.

Amber said, “As a line manager I think it’s really important to support your staff at every opportunity. I think a lot of people focus on physical health but it’s so important to look after mental health too.

“I don’t want anyone to have to hide their mental health issues and not talk about it and I want people in the team to feel comfortable at all times and know that they can be open and honest. We would never judge or penalise anyone for it.

Samantha said, “It was a massive surprise to win the Award. It’s so lovely to be recognised for something you do everyday. I just feel it’s my job.”

Chief Executive of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Gary Doherty said, “We understand the importance of staff wellbeing and the team have said that Amber and Samantha are great examples of how managers can support staff.

“I’ve been told that Amber and Sam really work hard to ensure the staff under their direction are supported and can flourish in their roles. A big well done to them both.”
